Happy summer, all!
The hotter, heavier weather can play tricks on our skin, so how do we tackle it? The skincare basics stay the same, but this weather has inspired us to choose the lighter moisturizer and up the sunscreen application. What about exfoliating habits? With all the summer sweating and sun exposure, it’s a legitimate question: how often should we be exfoliating?
Those who cover up more diligently outside or choose to remain indoors, can maintain the same exfoliation habits. Choosing this lifestyle provides protection for the skin and prevents potential damage that can occur when newer layers of skin are exposed to the sun.
For the water babies and sun worshippers, cut back on the exfoliating. Exfoliating can increase sun sensitivity by up to 45%, according to renowned esthetician Renee Rouleau. The removal of that dead skin cell layer leaves your skin vulnerable to the elements and can trigger an adverse reaction. Once or twice a week is a safe practice.
There are two types of exfoliants: chemical and physical. Chemical exfoliants include serums and cleansers that are less invasive, and lend themselves to consistent summer use. Physical exfoliants are slightly more aggressive because they use granules and physical components to remove the outer layer of the skin.
At Sanctuary, we offer a range of products and services for skin exfoliation. Our newest additions are the Eminence facial scrubs, which are physical exfoliants made from plant botanicals, so they are gentle enough for summer use. Our Clarisonic brushes are light physical exfoliators, but truly more of a deep thorough cleanse, mild enough to clean smooth summer skin. SkinCeuticals’ C+AHA serum is a fantastic two-in-one product that chemically exfoliates and smooths the surface with hydroxy acids, while actively fighting free radicals and future damage with antioxidants via pure vitamin C.
