How Often Do You Really Need A Facial? - Sanctuary Spa & Skin Care

February 3, 2023

Ahh, spa days. There truly is nothing quite like having the opportunity to carve out some time to take care of both your body and mind. Because we specialize in skin care, the majority of the services we provide are facials. We love being able to transform someone’s day with an afternoon of relaxation, but are also aware of the critical skin care benefits that a facial can provide.

Facials utilize products that are only available to trained and licensed professionals. These products, like chemical exfoliants, serums, and masks, can make a transformative difference that is visible. Yes, of course facials are relaxing! That alone is a health benefit in and of itself. But in order to maintain your most healthy skin and reach your desired goals, how often should you be getting one?

To put it frankly, that all depends on the individual. Not every face is the same. Facial needs vary depending on age, skin concerns, goals, and even lifestyle habits. On average, we would recommend getting a facial every 4-6 weeks. However, clients with more serious skin concerns, such as acne or hyperpigmentation, are more likely to benefit from receiving treatments in a series of 3-6, with visits closer together. On the other hand, clients with young, healthy skin may not even need regular monthly facials since their skin is still able to regenerate quickly on its own.

Other factors that can influence the frequency of your facials have to do with the nature of the treatment itself. Some treatments are mild enough that they can be preformed weekly without any risk. Other treatments, that impact the epidermis to the basal layer (usually produce mild flaking) can be preformed monthly, and still yet, more aggressive chemical peels that affect the dermis can be preformed every 3-6 months, while some are only recommended a couple times per year. For clients without the need for intensive treatments, but still want to keep their skin looking healthy and young, we hold tight to the rule of visiting your esthetician every 4-6 weeks.

But don’t forget… your at-home regimen is just as important as your regular professional treatment. Think about it this way: you can go to the gym and exercise with a personal trainer all you want. But unless what you are eating at home is supporting what you do with your trainer, you won’t get the results you desire. The same concept applies for skin care. If you aren’t taking care of your skin at home, your regular facial won’t have as much of a lasting impact as it could.

In order to not only reach your skin care goals, but pass them, speak to your esthetician about recommended treatments and an individualized home regimen.
