Microderma- What? - Sanctuary Spa & Skin Care

February 3, 2023

Microdermabrasion, sometimes known as the “micro… uhh… I don’t know how to say it” treatment, seems to be peeking great curiosity in our society. We have found that many who book this treatment are not quite sure what it is that they are booking, or why. Not sure about you, but we think that sounds a little scary. To help educate our clients and readers, we thought we would give you the whole scoop right here, right now!

What is it?

Microdermabrasion is a treatment that involves using a special tool that removes the stratum corneum. “Stratum Corneum” is just the fancy, scientific way of saying “the outermost later of your skin”. When this layer of skin is removed, your body responds as if it has just been injured, and quickly starts working to repair the lost skin cells with new, fresh, smooth ones. The treatment is about 30 minutes, unless your esthetician includes it within a facial, in which case, it can be about an hour. Ideally, you’ll want to receive the 30-minute treatment every 7-14 days for optimal results, since microdermabrasion is done best inside of a series. You can extend it to a full facial about every 4-6 weeks or so.

Does it hurt?

Not at all! In fact, microdermabrasion is one of the fastest, gentlest, most non-invasive anti-aging treatments around today. The only thing to be aware of us is that your skin will be a bit tender after the treatment. Redness and sensitivity can last anywhere from an hour to two days, depending on the individual. It is absolutely crucial that you follow your treatment with a rich moisturizer, since during the process of microdermabrasion, moisture is eliminated from your skin. When receiving a professional treatment, this step should be included. Afterwards, make sure to be on top of your sunscreen and avoid direct contact with the sun. Remember- tenderness, and slight stinging from sweat is totally normal!

Who can get a microdermabrasion?

Almost anyone can benefit from a microdermabrasion… emphasis on the “almost“. The best results are often seen in individuals aging around 35-50, since the treatment is so great for anti-aging purposes. However, if you suffer from skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, dermatitis, psoriosis, have open sores, or suffer from widespread acne, microdermabrasion is not for you. Since the microdermabrasion is known to help with acne scarring and the removal of blemishes, many people think that means that those suffering from acne are the perfect clients. Wrong! For those with widespread, active acne, microdermabrasion will only spread the bacteria around, thus creating more breakouts.

What are the benefits?

  • Minimizes/unclogs pores
  • Reduces surface level hyperpigmentation and discoloration
  • Helps with sun damage and acne scarring
  • Can remove blemishes (*remember that those with widespread, active acne should not do microdermabrasion)
  • Aids in the penetration of skin care products by up to 50%
  • Assists circulation and cell renewal
  • Makeup goes on smoother
